About Me
Welcome to my dream come true. I love writing the Mackenzie Prentice Mysteries, creating this world of Three Rivers, which strongly resembles the town where I live, but has vestiges of every other place I’ve lived, and some I’ve only dreamed of.
The writing dream began in elementary school (so true for so many of us!) in the sunroom—my bedroom—of a second-floor apartment in the inner city of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The room’s seven windows gave me a great view to life unfolding on the street below. Characters passing, little dramas playing out among the neighbors, the sounds and smells of our diverse neighborhood—all tucked away in the file cabinets of my mind, fodder for my future fiction career.
My first books were humorous inspiration / memoir published by HarperCollins Zondervan: When Did I Stop Being Barbie and Become Mrs. Potato Head; Confessions of a Prayer Wimp; and When Did My Life Become a Game of Twister. During those twenty years, I traveled around the country as a keynote humorist, bringing laughter and encouragement to women’s events. (Perhaps we met somewhere out there.)
Life changed dramatically in 2004. My mother, age 90, needed care. (You might know what that’s like.) I became a family caregiver for the next six years. After she passed, I went back to college (at 60!) and got a master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and now work in clinical practice part-time.
I spend the rest of the week hanging out with Mackenzie and the gang in Three Rivers, and as a mixed media collage artist. (I mean, seriously, what is better than fingers covered in paint and glue?) Some of that art ends up on the covers of my books.
My darling husband, Terry, and I live in the Wisconsin woods with our goldendoodle, Sammy, who is named after our favorite pizza place. I’d love to keep in touch. Subscribe below to receive my latest updates or visit me on Substack: Old Woman, New Life.
